Knit for children in need – 2011 Guardian Angel Knitting Program

Now in it’s 13th year, Guardian Pharmacy is once again running their Guardian Angel Knitting Program. The program will launch on 1st June and continue to 31st August.

Each year the Guardian Angel knitting program encourages knitters of all levels – from novices to nannas, children to crafty pros – to pick up sticks, hone their skills and donate their woollen creations to Australians in need. Knitted items include clothes, blankets, scarves, beanies and other garments.

This year Guardian Pharmacy is proud to partner with Variety – the Children’s Charity, a national not-for-profit organisation empowering children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs.
Variety Australia and in light of the recent Christchurch earthquakes, Variety New Zealand have been recruited for the program.

Variety General Manager David Small, says: “We are excited to partner with the Guardian Angel Knitting Program to help children and families who are experiencing difficult times across Australia and New Zealand, and we are encouraging all Australians to knit for children in need.”

Spotlight has again joined the campaign as a partner, supplying patterns and discounts on wool through the 2011 Guardian Angel Knitting Book. “Spotlight is again proud to be supporting the
Guardian Angel campaign and encourages everyone to pick up their needles and yarn and get knitting!” said Steve Carey, Corporate Affairs, Spotlight.

In 2010, over 100,000 warm, knitted garments were created and donated through the Guardian Angel Program. That’s enough pieces to clothe a capacity crowd at the MCG!
“We are encouraging all to take flight as a Guardian Angel this June, July and August and support
children in need,” said Angie Moore, Marketing Programs Manager for Guardian Pharmacy.
“The Guardian Angel Knitting Program is testament to Guardian Pharmacy’s commitment to supporting
the local communities in which we operate,” Ms Moore continued.

Australian Designers Get On Board

Leading Australian designers Bettina Liano, JasonGrech, Nicolangëla and Lisa Barron have joined forces with Guardian Pharmacy’s annual charity campaign Guardian Angel to encourage the community to knit for those in need.

Each year, from June to August, the Guardian Angel Knitting Program encourages all Australians to knit items including clothes, blankets, scarves and beanies, and hand them to their local Guardian Pharmacy. This year Variety – the children’s charity will receive the items and distribute to kids less fortunate in Australia and New Zealand.

Leading by example, these top designers encourage all knitters, from novices to nannas, to pick up sticks, hone their skills and donate their woollen creations to those in need this winter.

“As the temperature drops and winter sets in, I am proud to be one of Guardian Pharmacy’s ‘Guardian Angels’ and support this worthwhile charity,” said Lisa Barron.

“Knitting is not just for Nannas! As a top fashion trend for this winter, I encourage everyone to get involved,” said Jason Grech.

“As a mother myself, it’s a great feeling to give back to the community and kids in need,” said Nicole Williams, designer, Nicolangela.

“I have always felt strongly about charities that target disadvantaged children and see the Guardian Angel Program as a great platform to show my support,” commented Bettina Liano.

The exclusive garments will be auctioned through charity partner Variety, with all proceeds going to helping less fortunate children in Australia and New Zealand.
