Aveda Affinity black tote-bag
Aveda provides a better solution to the paper versus plastic bag dilemma – choose neither, choose to re-use! Aveda’s new Affinity Tote-bag is larger and more durable than its predecessor and made from a lightweight material consisting of 80% recycled cotton and 20% recycled PET to help reduce the number of disposable bags entering waste.
Five hundred billion to one trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year and billions end up as litter. According to the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation, more than a million birds and 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles die every year from eating or getting entangled in plastic. There are 46,000 pieces of plastic litter floating in every square mile of ocean, according to the United Nations Environment Program.
In the Northern Pacific Gyre, a great vortex of ocean currents, there’s now a swirling mass of plastic trash about 1,000 miles off the coast of California, which spans an area that’s twice the size of Texas, including fragments of plastic bags.
In order to further support Aveda’s bag-less strategy, the new Aveda Affinity black tote-bag has been created to encourage people to use a re-usable bag rather than plastic or paper shopping bags for purchases – which will collectively reduce the number of paper and plastic bags entering the waste stream.

What: On Sunday 19 April, Aveda launched its inaugural walk for water campaign, a global initiative that acknowledges the daily struggle of over one billion people who do not have access to clean water. The Sydney Walk for Water began at 10am from Bondi Beach, and walked to Bronte and return.
Aveda salons and spas hosted a series of 6km walks across 26 cities globally, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, with a 6km walk representing the average distance women in developing countries walk daily to collect water (UNISEF).
Worldwide, 1.2 billion people lack access to the water they need to live. The walks in Australia will raise money for Global Greengrants Fund, a nonprofit that supports grassroots efforts to preserve clean water and protect the environment in more than 100 countries worldwide.
For the third consecutive year, Aveda is partnering with Global Greengrants Fund as their exclusive global Earth Month partner to provide grants for community-based water projects around the world. An international organisation dedicated to environmental justice and sustainability, Global Greengrants Fund provides small grants to grassroots organisations working for clean water, clean air, sustainable livelihoods and healthy communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America and island nations around the world. Aveda’s Earth Month projects will also support regional partners working to preserve clean water locally.
To date, Aveda has raised $4.9 million for organizations protecting clean water and hopes to raise an additional $3 million (USD) for water-related issues in 2009. Earth Month is an international effort by the Aveda group of companies during the month of April to raise awareness and funds around a common cause.
