The Melbourne International Beauty Expo proves that new innovations are even more important than ever

It was a case of all things new at this year’s Melbourne International Beauty Expo where a keen crowd of visitors could be seen buzzing around the floor intently watching demonstrations and trialling new products on offer at each stand.
Anti-aging solutions, mineral cosmetics, revolutionary new light treatments, in-salon teeth whitening and organic treatments were just a few products included in the line up of over 120 exhibitors showcasing some of the latest innovations in the beauty industry today.
“What a fast paced and very busy couple of days! It was great to see so many people milling around the expo floor in Melbourne this weekend. The seminar rooms were buzzing, the workshops were sold out and Rae Morris drew the biggest crowd I have seen around the stage. And with so many participants in the newly re-introduced Nail Awards, we’re happy to be able to offer a platform for artists to showcase their talent.” Lauren Ebbeck, Exhibition Director.

Clive Smith, Managing Director (Australia) of Payot Paris says “The Melbourne International Beauty Expo is an important part of our marketing strategy as it enables us to catch up with our VIP customers and to preview our new product ranges. This year was no exception”.

And it wasn’t! Savvy beauty industry professionals flocked to the beauty expo floor, proving that it’s more important than ever to keep abreast of new products, trends, and techniques that will keep them one step ahead of their competition.

2009 saw the return of the Nail Awards for the first time in three years to the Melbourne Beauty Expo.Thirty three talented nail artists competed for the prestigious award titles. Hosted by Viv Symmonds, three time nail award champion, contestants battled it out in separate categories of Flat Nail Art, Novice French Twist, French Twist and Sculptured Nails.

One of the biggest highlights of the weekend was the special guest demonstration by celebrity makeup artist Rae Morris. Over three hundred visitors gathered around the main stage to watch as Rae entertained the crowd with celebrity stories and shared details of her expert tips and tricks that have made her such a success in the trade.

CatsThe fantasy makeup competition featuring this year’s theme ‘Broadway Musical’ showcased an all impressive line up of budding industry talent. The winner, Elisa Lago recreated her interpretation of the theatre production makeup for Cats, along side runners up with their interpretations of The Little Mermaid, and Chicago.
The Bridal category also won hearts with eleven contestants competing for the winning title which was taken out by Melissa Vonstanke.
Proving extremely popular was the new educational format.
A total of six seminars were held over the two days at no charge to registered visitors. It was a full house when Paul Carbis presented a seminar on ‘How good business ethics can earn you money’. He was followed by Michelle Cullen who presented a seminar on ‘The latest health and hygiene regulations’. One salon owner enthused “the seminar was great! Very informative, and hygiene is so important – a duty of care really”. Rounding out the seminar program were sessions on ‘The impact of communication on customer service’, ‘Traineeships and apprentices in Victoria’ and ‘Tips on Marketing 101’.
To complement the educational seminar schedule were five hands-on workshops held by the Elly Lukas College which sold out on both days.
hot-stone-facialParticipants were privy to learning the secrets and benefits of the new Hot Stone Facial Massage and Indian Head Massage. “The workshop was very well presented. Far better than I anticipated (the) instructor was brilliant, she made it very easy to absorb all the information. The workshop is great value for money and I would definitely attend next year” quotes one workshop participant.
Rob Cawthorne, CEO of the Carbon Reduction institute presented The Low Carbon Spa and Beauty to a VIP crowd. “Once engaged, members of the Spa and Beauty Initiative will find that the costs (of undertaking the initiative) are relatively small and are outweighed by the benefits from raising their profile and capturing climate conscious consumers” says Rob Cawthorne.
