Stephanie Porter solves the age-old problem of Panda Eyes
With her background in fashion and beauty marketing and the encouragement of her mascara-stained friends and family, Stephanie set about solving the panda eyes problem once and for all. Four years, three weddings, six airport farewells, 57 viewings of The Notebook, one humid Vietnamese holiday and a couple of surprise sleepovers later, PANDA PEN is ready for launch!
After working in marketing for Paul Mitchell hair care and L’Oreal Australia on Garnier and Maybelline Stephanie believed strongly enough in her vision for PANDA PEN to form her own business – DE-COY AUSTRALIA – and work full time designing this unique product.
From the outset Stephanie intended to create a revolutionary product, she wanted to give every woman the best make-up removal device they’d ever known.
“The idea came to me on a dreary London afternoon. I‟d had back-to-back meetings, a sweaty commute and a rushed lunch with a friend, I ducked into the bathroom to freshen up and once again I had mascara down my face and I knew right then I had to do something about it!”
THE PROCESS
Armed with an idea and a vision for what she wanted to create, Stephanie saw PANDA PEN through all stages from conception to reality:
(industrial design) Finding an industrial designer here in Australia with experience in creating cosmetic products was almost impossible, so Stephanie turned to an industrial designer with experience in designing medical grade products. Stephanie worked alongside an industrial designer in Melbourne to develop a clever purse sized product that delivers a clean, hygienic woven cotton tip every time it’s used – from the first rescue mission to the last.
(graphic design) Once the basic function and design were in motion, it was time to think about the look and feel of Panda Pen. Stephanie wanted to create a clean, fresh look that let consumers know exactly what they were purchasing.
“PANDA PEN is not a „beauty‟ product. It‟s not fussy, or fancy. It‟s not a gimmick. It‟s a straightforward solution to an age-old problem. Nothing more, nothing less,” says Stephanie.
(production) Stephanie worked with a chemist to design an eye make-up remover that effectively removed all types of mascara and eyeliner without leaving an oily residue.
(protection) During the production and design phase Stephanie wanted to protect her work so she trademarked ‘De-Coy’ and ‘PANDA PEN‘ and patented the design.
“I searched patent databases and couldn’t find anything to match my invention. I didn‟t want to say PANDA PEN was the best solution for women all over the world, I wanted to know PANDA PEN was the best solution for women all over the world.”
